School of Humanities & Social Sciences
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) currently includes three majors: Communication, Sociology and Psychology in cooperation with the respective departments of Peking University’s main campus. With regard to education, the school emphasizes societal concerns and the combination of theories with practices; and advocates teaching in the field. Students are encouraged to participate in various research projects; the faculty is devoted to cultivating the students’ comprehensive capabilities.

In the academic research field, the school, taking school’s unique location of Shenzhen and its strong academic support from the main campus, used the theoretical tools given by sociology, communication and psychology to launch intensive research focused on Shenzhen and Pearl River Delta. The issues raised in urbanization, regional development, population, immigration, industrial transformation, social security, urban life and culture in this area have been absorbed into the school’s research projects. Fieldwork studies are also conducted on a wide range of subjects including social phenomena, current debates, policies and regulations, development strategies, social thoughts, culture, arts, fashion and entertainment.

In addition to Peking University’s tradition of humanitarian ideas (as expressed in its motto), the school has developed another tradition in line with the spirit of Shenzhen to be “explorative, pragmatic and efficient.” It has made great efforts to realize its education goals with “comprehensive quality, professional knowledge, international vision and social responsibility.”

Focusing on discipline developments and society, SHSS continuously makes contributions to the socio-economic development and the cultural construction of Shenzhen, the Pearl River Delta and the whole country by encouraging critical thinking, interest in the humanities and self development.
