School of Chemical Biology & Biotechnology

The School of Chemical Biology & Biotechnology (SCBB), founded in 2003, features three key facilities for research and postgraduate education: the Laboratory of Chemical Genomics, the Nano- and Micro-Material Research Center and the Translational Medicine Center. This combination of synthetic organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry and biology establishes a platform for cutting-edge innovation in the medical field. SCBB provides premium support  and expertise to the nation's biomedical industry as it trains highly talented biomedical personnel.

In 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school became the first PhD-granting institution in the field of “Chemical Genomics.” SCBB building was completed in 2012 with a funding of 30 million RMB, a part of Peking University's “985 Plan.” The Laboratory of Chemical Genomics is a Key Laboratory for Guangdong province, as well as an advanced research and development  incubator, approved by the State Ministry of Science and Technology.

SCBB has established a forefront international team attracting scientists from innovative research institutions worldwide. Its laboratories explore anticancer and antiviral agent relationships through a combination of synthetic organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, biology, theoretical and computational chemistry and material sciences. It has implemented a joint chemistry-biology teaching model that is rooted in top-quality research vital to the discovery of new drugs. SCBB will become a high-priority Chinese research and development incubator for life science and medicine education as it will soon have a robust, academic and innovative presence into the pharmaceutical industry.

The Key Laboratory of Genomics Chemistry

The Laboratory of Genomic Chemistry (LGC) is an entity of School of Chemical Biology and Biotechnology comprised of eminent scientists in the areas of chemical biology, synthetic organic chemistry, computational chemistry, translational medicine and bioinformatics.

It is dedicated to the discovery of anticancer, anti-cardiovascular, anti-neurodegenerative and antiviral drugs and the filing of their associated intellectual property and proprietary rights. LGC has founded research platforms based on synthetic chemistry, computational chemistry, and translational medicine while contributing top basic science research to the biomedical industry.

In 2007, after years of efforts, LGC was granted the status of Key Laboratory Project in Guangdong Province, making it one of the four provincial-level Key Laboratories in Shenzhen. It was assessed as one of the best laboratories in the Shenzhen Key Laboratory evaluations in 2009 and gained eligibility as a National Research and Development center in 2010.

Nano-Micro MaterialLaboratory is one of the nation’s top-priority research and development areas and is another major endeavor of the School of Biology and Biotechnology. The laboratory is devoted to preparing researchers for future leadership in the field by conducting cutting-edge research on challenging topics such as environmentally safe technologies for material synthesis, (precise size and shape control), supra-molecular assembly and surface structural tailoring. Accomplishments in these areas have and will continue to contribute to new industries and further advancements of China’s emerging high-tech industries in nano and micro materials.
