School of Transnational Law

The School of Transnational Law (STL) is the world’s first law school to offer a program that combines a Chinese Juris Master degree and an American Juris Doctor degree. Since its founding in 2008, STL has equipped its graduates to become “dual qualified” – prepared for legal careers in the most challenging transnational contexts, both domestically and abroad.

The curriculum covers the full scope of the two nations’ legal systems, as well as a variety of legal systems from Europe and Asia. Combining theory and practice, the pedagogy deploys the Socratic Method and other techniques to foster the skills required at the highest levels of legal practice. As China continues to expand its role in the global economy, it will have ever greater need for professionals with this kind of broad intellectual training.

The School of Transnational Law represents an important step in the advancement of Chinese legal education. It enables China’s best students to become fully prepared for transnational practice without having to leave Chinese soil. In addition, it introduces new teaching techniques in China that other schools may choose to emulate. STL aspires to emerge in the coming decade as the first law school outside the U.S. to be accredited by the American Bar Association and to attain recognition as Asia’s top law school as well as one of the world’s top 20 law schools.

To attain its objectives, STL has been highly selective in faculty recruitment. Current Dean, Philip McConnaghay isthe founding dean of Penn State University’s law school and School of International Affairs. Jeffrey Lehman, Founding Dean of STL, is the former president of Cornell University and former Dean of the University of Michigan Law School. Resident faculty includes and Francis Snyder (one of the world’s foremost authorities on European Union Law, recruited from the London School of Economics) andThomas Man (specialist in cross-border transactions).

Currently, there are over 400 graduate students studying at STL. In 2017, STL graduated 104 students.
