School of Urban Planning & Design

The School of Urban Planning and Design (SUPD) engages Peking University's multi-disciplinary team with the best practices of the Great-Pearl River Delta's rapid urbanization. SUPD, founded in 2009, aspires to address emerging urbanization issues in the context of global change, thus leading and promoting efforts to advance urbanization research in China. SUPD is positioned as an important growth engine in the study of Urban and Rural Coordinated Development.

The school offers two professional MS programs in Geography: Urban and Regional Planning; and landscape design. It also has two PhD programs: Physical Geography and Human Geography. In 2017, 63 students graduated from SUPD, including 3 doctoral students. There are currently more than 185 full-time students enrolled.

SUPD hosts three branches of the Key Laboratory for Urban Habitat Environment Science & Technology, Environmental Science and Technology: the Laboratory of Basic Geography, the Laboratory of Applied Ecology and the Digital City Laboratory. The school also has Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Circular Economy; the Landscape Ecology & Digital City Research Center; the Land Economy and Housing Research Center; the Ecological Restoration and Resource Recovery of Wastes Research Center; the China Urban Design Research Center; the PKU-HKU Hong Kong–Shenzhen Development and Innovation Research Center; the PKU-UNC Urban and Regional Planning Management Co-research Center; and the Urban-Rural Planning and Resource Management Training Center.

The Shenzhen Key Laboratory for Cyclic Economy

The laboratory explores effective policy approach and technical support for the city sustainable development in the perspective of a circular economy, trying to resolve the specific issues involving resources and environmental protection and a coordinated socioeconomic development areas of rapid urbanization.

The main ambition of the laboratory is to build a public policy and management system, hazard free solid waste treatment and recycling, new biomass energy technology, energy conservation and emission reduction technology in industrial production and a comprehensive reparation technology for environmental damage (water, soil).
