February 17, 2016 brought a new batch of exchange student arrivals to Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. Students were greeted by international staff and full-time international student volunteers at Mirror Lake to help with check-in. The spring semester has a total exchange student count of 47 students coming from 17 different countries, including Australia, Portugal, Russia, France, Belgium, and many others. That same evening, everyone reconvened for a group trip to the local IKEA to make the dorms feel like home.
The following day was packed with orientation activities, including in-depth presentations on campus life and culture shock and adjustment, a University Town and Pingshan village tour, SIM card registration, and other procedures necessary for adjusting to a new country of a foreign language. After wrapping up, students met up for an evening of activities favored by locals: street barbecue and KTV.
The final day of the new student welcome orientation was an optional group trip to the city center to buy transport cards and get familiar with public transport. Most students chose to see the Dongmen Markets in Luohu, a lively pedestrian area ideal for an afternoon of shopping and food. Students were free to spend the rest of their weekend relaxing and getting ready for courses that began the following Monday.
