Nanyan Campus Singing Competition

On the evening of April 27th, as a part the 114 anniversary party of Peking University, the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School"Top Ten Campus Singer Contest” final competition was held in the International Conference Center. 17 contestants made it through the preliminaries and semi-finals fiercely competed for their dream of music.



The "Top Ten Campus Singer Competition” is of great interest of students every year. This year, it attracted more attention for its beautiful singers and enthusiastic audiences. Chancellor Wen Hai delivered a warm welcome expressing his wishes for the 114 anniversary of Peking University before the competition began. He told us work hard and serve the country, and most importantly, not to forget the May Forth Spirit.




The judges consisted of the staff choir conductor Yabo Zhao, Deputy Secretary Ji Sun, lead singer of the Music Association and the 2010-2011 runner-up of the "Top Ten Campus Singer," Peng Wang, Technical Director of the Music Association Chenyu Ou, and the Conductor of Peking University Nanyan Troupe Choir Qiuming Chen.

The competition was divided into three parts. The first part was “Passion 90 seconds” where contestants impressed the judges from the audience who were randomly selected beforehand. This session had 7 competitors directly qualify while 3 had to compete again in the next session. Bo Gao vividly interpreted "Princess" telling the story of the determination for love, “B Minor Rain” by Mengdi Li appeared to bring the audience back to the innocent age, and finally Suoming Zhang’s “Coolest Ethnic” which is sweeping the world ignited the audience’s passion as well.



The second part was “Just Sing It,” in which 10 competitors give an interpretation of a full-length song and the top 6 competitors entered into the final round. The highlight of this session was the original song “Should” written by Chongwen Liu, winning rounds of applause of the audience




In the final part, the final 6 competitors chose any of the 30 songs selected by the judges beforehand. The judges then distributed the flowers with different colors representing different scores to award the first, second and third prize. Yingbo Zhang’s “What I Missed” expressed the sentimental and melancholic feeling. “Fleeting” by Mengdi Li and Long Wang’s interpretation of “Invisible Wings” stunned the audience. The love song “Want to Sing It for You,” performed by Huster group highly won great applause from the audience.








After nearly four hours’ of competition, Chongwen Liu won first place, Yingbo Zhang together with Mengdi Li were awarded second prize while the Huster group, Long Wang and Bo Gao won third prize. The other four “Top Ten Singers” were Fanglin Liang, Tianran Tao, Lu Song and Suoming Zhang. In addition, the duet of Xue Zhou and Zehui Li won the “Best Popularity” through the SMS and MMS support.
 
This successful event was due to the dedication of the staff behind the scenes. The tacit understanding between host Bing Han and Hostess Shiyu Li received acclaim from the audience. The competition ended with the song “My Future is Not a Dream,” performed by Chongwen Liu and last year's champion Feng Zhao.
