Peking Opera meets PKU Shenzhen: A lofty show of an ancient art

The Peking Opera performed exclusively for faculty, staff and students of PKU Shenzhen. This special performance was sponsored by the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee, co-sponsored by Graduate Students Union of Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University and hosted by Shenzhen Mass Art Museum. The main performers were from Shenzhen Xiaguang Peking Opera Troupe, a Shenzhen based company of actors specializing in performing the legendary Peking Opera. This quintessential display of Chinese culture was attended by faculty members and students from all over PKU Shenzhen including the Executive Dean of The School of Transnational Law Professor Stephen Yandle, Deputy Director of the Student Services Office and Secretary of the Communist Youth League Mrs. Luo Bifang. The mystic demeanor of the performance and the pantomimic display of the actors charmed the entire audience.

The main aim of the performance was to performance was to spread the traditional art of Peking Opera to the youth of China and to highlight the beauty of Chinese culture. The Shenzhen Xiaguang Peking Opera Troupe presented classic Peking Opera techniques of such as, Sichuan Style Face Changing, and performances of “Bao Gong,” “Golden Monkeys,” and “Beauties Scattering Spring Blossoms.” These were performed by leading actors of national acclaim such as He Jin Xia, Chen Shaofu and Wang Hongguang. Each of the subsequent performance outdid the other and was met with a huge round of applause at the end.

At the end of the opera, Professor Stephen Yandle and Mrs. Luo walked onto the stage and shook hands with the actors one by one and took group photos with them. Professor Yandle, at the end, appreciated the talent of all the actors. When asked whether the language problem prevented him from understanding the opera, the professor replied, “Absolutely not, art knows no borders!”
