Professor Jason D. Shaw on Publishing Reflections

Date:

On Wednesday December 10th, Jason D. Shaw, Chair Professor of Management and Co-Director of the Centre for Leadership and Innovation in the Faculty of Business at ‘The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’ addressed faculty and students at PHBS about research and publishing processes.

Professor Shaw received his Doctorate from the University of Arkansas in 1997. His research has appeared or been accepted for publication in the most prestigious scientific outlets: The Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Journal of Applied Psychology.

From 2010-2013, he served as Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He previously served in elected positions on the Executive Committee of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management and on the Board of Governors for the Southern Management Association. Prior to his appointment at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, he was a Professor at the Universities of Minnesota, Kentucky and Drexel. Before academia, he was an analyst for the Boeing Company.

At PHBS, Professor Shaw spoke about the review process of research papers and described it as tough and long. In his opinion, a writer should not get emotionally involved in this procedure, even though it is an inspiring one.

He then gave the audience some advice on how to write strong and precise papers: “Every researcher, while writing a paper should be very careful about the way the paper is written.” In his opinion, it is important to get to the point, be patient when gathering information and always get feedback from people you trust. He added that “Rushing into submitting papers may only qualify your paper as a bad one.”

Last but not least, Professor Shaw talked about the process of rejection and how researchers should face it. He said that “learning from review rejection is important” as the researcher should stay positive, focus and look for patterns in the rejection letter.

Professor Shaw is a visiting scholar and speaker in China, Finland, Austria, Germany, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Thailand, and the USA.
