PHBS Chinese Studies Students visit Huawei HQ

The highly anticipated visit to Huawei Headquarters by PHBS Students finally came on Thursday, the 12
th
of March. The trip to Huawei, which ranks number 285 on the Worldwide Fortune 500 list, was scheduled in the late afternoon. Professor Haifeng Huang and his China Studies class planned a tour of the company as part of the course curriculum. They allowed a couple extra students to join in the tour, bringing the tally of students to 50. Students were encouraged to dress in formal attire and embarked on a trip that would change how some view life in the corporate world.
Huawei Head Quarters is located in Shenzhen's Longgang district, and it is carefully designed and landscaped to give an atmosphere of luxury that boasts relaxation and encourages creativity. Our first stop was the Administration Building which is located in a leafy section of the headquarters. The design of the building also paid careful attention to the surrounding green environment. Due to its vast size, there is a shuttle bus offered for convenience.
After a short trip on the shuttle bus, the PHBS group found themselves in building G, where the Exhibition Center is housed. Students were greeted with a large banner to welcome them on their visit.
One gets the sense that at Huawei, every single person is valued and treated with respect. At the Exhibition Center, students were introduced to the various technological interests of Huawei. They are involved in cloud computing, cell phones and telecommunications equipment, just to name a few. The Exhibition Center also has a debate room, where people from different teams can sit in different rooms and communicate via a large television screen.
Our final stop was the theater located in building F where we had a Q and A session with one of the Huawei employees. This was a very informative part of the session. Students learned that Huawei was founded in 1987 by Ren Hengfei and has now grown into a global powerhouse that employs over 150,000 people in over 170 countries. It is the only IT company in the Fortune 500 that is privately funded. This is because over 80,000 Huawei employees are stockholders in the company, making Huawei a 100% employee owned company. This interesting fact is the reason why they have not gone public like Alibaba and Tencent.
On a personal note, I am grateful to Peking University Shenzhen for opening my eyes to the see opportunities this world can afford me, only if I dare to dream. With that I say to all my fellow PKU’ers with PKU the sky is the limit, do not limit yourself.
