Night on Mirror Lake: 2014 New Year’s Carnival

December 25th, this date will always be remembered by all members of the PKU Shenzhen community as the time of the Night on Mirror Lake, the annual New Year’s carnival of PKU Shenzhen which left jubilant and in remembrance of the wonderful time that we have had at PKU Shenzhen. The Night on Mirror Lake marks the culmination of another year of rigorous life here at PKU Shenzhen.

The party started off with the traditional costume parade. Every school came to the stage in traditional costumes and amazed the audience. After that, the show began and amid vigorous cheer, ten girls dressing set the stage ablaze with their twiddles and twists, pushing the atmosphere of the party to vigor of youth and glitz. The party was a confluence of many perspectives and themes.

The Most Captivating Scene —Parade of Costumes

As a part of PKU Shenzhen’s traditional performance, the Parade of Costumes always bring some surprise and never disappoints. This year was no different. Different schools dressed in different style of clothes, gave everyone a glimpse of another world which till now could only be found in fairy tales. Students from School of Chemical Biology and Biotechnology dressed up as the popular Rubber Duck. PHBS students and faculty members led us back in time they dressed like Chinese emperors or princesses.

The Most Interesting Scene—Love of Learning

The carnival was not just for PKU Shenzhen students. Children from Zhuoya Primary School also brought a wonderful performance to the show. Their performance added an element of innocence to the party. Love of learning is a dance based on an ancient Chinese literature and uses dance to express its meaning and how to write Hanzi. It was really interesting to see so many children using writing brushes to depict different Chinese characters.

The Most Romantic Scene— The Proposal

The topical of this year’s carnival was ‘love’ and it was highlighted in most of the performances. Everyone enjoyed a candid moment when an alumnus who had come to the carnival with his girlfriend invited her over to the stage and showed her a video made by him for her. The video captured many happy moments of this couple. The boy came finally to the stage with flower and proposed the girl for marriage. After about one minute consideration, the girl agreed.

The Most Exciting Moment—Raffle Drawing

The lottery draws was the part that people eagerly expected. This year, 4 rounds of draws were arranged, each round following a different method. For example, the third second prize came from the love letter students written previously. To be consistent the theme, the first prize was tickets from Shenzhen to Xiamen, one of the most romantic places in China. The Grand Prize attracted the most attention, this year’s award of 5000 RMB fund for travel. The grand prize was award to a PHBS student.
