Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School Holds 2024 Opening Ceremony

    In this season of autumn, a time of harvest and new beginnings, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKUSZ) held its opening ceremony for the 2024-2025 academic year on September 1st, 2024. All new students gathered at the University Town of Shenzhen (UTSZ) Sports Center to embark on a beautiful chapter of their academic life.

Present at the ceremony were Zhang Jin, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Standing Member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Peking University Committee, Vice President of PKU and chancellor of PKUSZ, Peng Shou, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chief Scientist of China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd, Director of the National Innovation Center for Advanced Glass Materials, and Visiting Professor at the School of Advanced Materials, Hai Wen, Vice Chairman of PKU Council and Founding Dean of PHBS, Yang Zhen, Executive Vice Chancellor of PKUSZ, Niu Hongwei and Pan Feng, Vice Chancellor of PKUSZ, An Xiaopeng and Zou Yuexian, Deputy Secretary of the CPC PKUSZ Committee, Dong Shaoling, a 2012 alumnus of the School of Transnational Law and chairman of Shenzhen Tuzhan Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., as well as leaders from schools at PKUSZ. The ceremony also featured a special guest, Ding Ning, Olympic table tennis champion, Grand Slam winner, Deputy Secretary of the Peking University Committee of China Communist Youth League, and teacher in the Department of Physical Education, who was invited to share her experiences with the audience. The ceremony was presided over by Tan Wenchang, Secretary of the CPC PKUSZ Committee.

    The warm-up session opened with poetry recitation, songs and street dance, inviting the audience to join the opening ceremony. PKUSZ Art Troupe and representatives of the PKU Top Ten Singers presented many wonderful performances that earned enthusiastic applause.

    Then, the national anthem began, and the new students from various schools, dressed in colorful uniforms, filled Nanyan Yuan with their vibrant energy as they sang together.

    The welcome video sparked cheers from the audience, using poetic language to capture the joy of students beginning their journey at PKUSZ. It reflected on past efforts while also expressing hope for infinite future possibilities.

    Li Xinrong, a second-year graduate student from the School of Transnational Law, delivered a speech sharing her journey from feeling lost upon enrollment to successfully integrating into the Nanyan Yuan. She encouraged the new students to stay true to themselves and not conform to any rigid standards. She advised them to broaden their horizons and explore the world, fully utilizing Shenzhen's abundant resources. She also inspired them to seek connections between personal fulfillment and social development, emphasizing that this approach enables individuals to make unique contributions in an era rich with opportunities and challenges.

    Chen Zhaolong, a faculty representative from the School of Advanced Materials, delivered an inspiring speech. He congratulated the new students on their admission to PKUSZ and shared his excitement from when he first stepped into Peking University as a freshman ten years ago. Drawing from his own journey, he described how he discovered his passion for graphene research and achieved social impact. He encouraged students to align their personal interests with societal needs. Chen emphasized that ongoing education would not only enrich individuals but also benefit society as a whole, and PKUSZ is a valuable platform for this growth. He urged students to actively engage in campus activities to maintain a healthy balance between their academic and personal lives. Finally, he reminded them to plan for the future, set clear goals, and pursue their dreams with determination.

    Liu Houcheng, a first-year student from the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering, reflected on his journey to Peking University through the Plan for Strengthening Basic Academic Disciplines. He recognized the significant impact of the school's interdisciplinary training model and Shenzhen's unique role as a hub for technological innovation. He expressed his commitment to being both determined and adaptable in pursuing his research goals. Looking ahead, he aims to contribute to technological innovation at both PKU and in Shenzhen.

    Zhang Jin extended a warm welcome and congratulations to the new students of 2024. He shared three key ideas focused on direction and path. First, as the new Nanyan generation, students should remain rooted in China while staying attuned to international trends and continually broadening their global perspectives. Second, they should leverage existing knowledge to explore the unknown and generate new insights. Finally, he encouraged them to consider personal, societal, and national needs from an interdisciplinary perspective. By doing so, PKU students can effectively navigate their paths and become talented individuals who bravely advance in this innovative era.

    With the 40th Teacher's Day approaching, the student representative took the stage to offer flowers to the professors, faculty, and staff at PKUSZ, expressing their deep gratitude and respect.

    In the presence of guests and teachers, the new students put on the PKU emblems. From that moment on, PKU became a new chapter in their life journeys, marking them as true PKUers.

    The ceremony concluded with everyone singing the melody of Yanyuan Qing. While the ceremony has come to an end, a new chapter for the students is just beginning. As they start marching on their journey in PKUSZ, we sincerely wish they will inherit and carry forward the spirit of PKU, and now all the 2024 new students at PKUSZ are ready to set sail.
