Professor Tian Yonghong Receives 2025 IEEE Hans Karlsson Standards Award

Date:

On December 31, 2024, the IEEE Computer Society officially announced: Professor Tian Yonghong of Peking University has been awarded the 2025 IEEE Hans Karlsson Standards Award for his outstanding leadership and contributions in the field of AI model representation and visual data coding. This marks the first time a Chinese scholar has received this honor, fully demonstrating the international academic community's high recognition of China's contributions to the global standardization process in this field.

The IEEE Hans Karlsson Standards Award, established in 1992, aims to recognize individuals who play key leadership roles in global standards development. It is one of the highest honors in the field of computer engineering standards, awarded to only one recipient each year. The award commemorates the pioneering contributions of Hans Karlsson, the main driving force behind the IEEE 1301 standard family and "Father of IEEE 1301," to international standards development. Industry consensus holds that standards development relies not only on technological breakthroughs but also requires the ability to coordinate across corporate competition and organizational differences. Only those with both professional expertise and international perspective can achieve breakthrough progress.

In the development of multiple international standards, including the world's first AI model standard IEEE 2941, Professor Tian led his research team in overcoming numerous technical challenges and actively coordinating interests between multinational companies and research institutions, making outstanding contributions to the final standards. His efforts have not only enhanced the influence of Chinese scholars in international standardization but also laid a solid foundation for global AI field's collaborative innovation and sustainable development, further promoting China's deep participation and voice in the international arena of AI and visual data.
