Giancarlo is an Italian student majoring in Management at Peking University HSBC Business School. A year and a half ago, he arrived at the Shenzhen campus, embarking on a journey to learn Chinese and International Management. From Europe to China, Giancarlo has maintained his passion for exploring the world, shining brightly on the vast stage of China-Europe cooperation.
A Journey of Learning: Embracing Multiculturalism
Before coming to Shenzhen, Giancarlo studied International Relations at the Paris Institute of Political Studies for five years. This experience opened a window for him to observe the global political and economic landscape, cultivating his sharp international perspective and deep understanding of political economy. In 2019, Giancarlo went to Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management as an exchange student. This period in Beijing left an indelible mark on him. Giancarlo said, “Beijing is a very old city, with a lot of traditions, and a lot of cultural significance for Chinese people.” Yet, Beijing also holds its own cherished significance. The city’s cultural richness quietly immersed him in Chinese traditions, allowing him to genuinely appreciate its profound heritage.

In 2023, driven by a strong interest in international trade and a desire to deepen his understanding of China, Giancarlo chose to pursue further studies at PHBS. He aims to integrate his expertise in international relations with business knowledge, laying a solid foundation for his future career. International trade, as a vital link connecting global economies, intertwines closely with his background in international relations. Recognizing the importance of business acumen in today’s globalized economy, he hopes to combine macro-level insights from international relations with micro-level management practices through systematic learning at PHBS. This approach will equip him to navigate complex economic and political challenges on the international stage.
Unlike Beijing, Shenzhen and the campus offered Giancarlo a fresh perspective. Shenzhen, a vibrant and dynamic international metropolis, thrives on innovation, technology, and global connectivity. Giancarlo experienced the city’s unique charm and witnessed the flourishing commercial development of Shenzhen and China at large.
From Campus to Career: PHBS Bridges an Internship at the European Chamber
Prior to joining PHBS, Giancarlo accumulated diverse practical experience. He interned at the French Consulate in San Francisco, where he assisted in diplomatic affairs, handled international documents, and organized diplomatic events. This exposure allowed him to observe the intricacies of international diplomacy and understand the delicate balance of cooperation and competition among nations.
Later, he worked at non-governmental organizations like the European Institute of Asian Studies in Brussels, engaging in the planning and execution of international trade projects. Collaborating with representatives from various countries, he facilitated trade and economic cooperation between Europe and Asia. This experience honed his understanding of international trade processes and cultural differences in business practices, teaching him to identify opportunities and resolve conflicts in multicultural environments.
Leveraging this unique background, Giancarlo secured an internship at the European Chamber of Commerce in China through PHBS’s connections and recommendations.
Shenzhen and Europe have achieved fruitful economic cooperation. Numerous European enterprises have established roots in Shenzhen, gaining market opportunities while contributing to the city’s economic growth and industrial upgrading.
At the European Chamber of Commerce, Giancarlo delved into China-Europe trade dynamics and market trends, providing professional analysis and consulting services to businesses on both sides. He actively participated in business events and seminars, building a robust network with entrepreneurs and experts. Through these experiences, he accumulated invaluable industry insights and connections, gradually becoming a professional well-versed in China-Europe trade.

The European Chamber in China serves as a platform to enhance trade ties and communication between China and Europe. European businesses utilize this platform to address challenges, while the Chinese government gains insights into their needs for more effective solutions.
In his practical endeavours, Giancarlo’s team facilitated China-Europe exchanges through various initiatives. For instance, he crafts insightful reports to enhance Chinese firms' comprehension of European market intricacies while assisting European enterprises in navigating the dynamic landscape of the Chinese market.
During his internship, he actively contributed to the Chamber’s mission through a variety of impactful projects. One significant example is his involvement in organizing policy advisory and advocacy events that helped European member companies navigate the regulatory landscape in China. For instance, he played a key role in organizing a high-level event on data transfer regulations with local Chinese authorities in Guangdong. This event provided European companies with crucial insights into the recent amendments to China’s data transfer laws, allowing them to better understand how they can manage and store data of Chinese consumers in compliance with Chinese regulations. Another project he worked on was focused on Human Resources, where they organized an event to help European firms better understand how to recruit European talent to China and facilitate visa processes for Chinese workers seeking opportunities in Europe. Through these experiences, he was able to contribute to the Chamber’s mission by fostering stronger connections between European companies and Chinese regulatory bodies, which ultimately helped companies improve their ability to do business in China.

Becoming a "China Hand": Learning Chinese, Understanding Culture
Giancarlo candidly shares, “China is the best combination of education, adventure and quality of life all put together.”
Peking University’s academic resources, distinguished faculty, and multicultural environment provided him with an exceptional platform for learning. Here, he engages with cutting-edge theories, research, and scholars worldwide.
China’s vast landscapes and cultural heritage also captivate him. During his free time, he travels across the country, exploring natural wonders and immersing himself in China’s history and customs, enriching his life experiences and cultural perspectives.
During his stay in China, he had the opportunity to explore various cities and regions, each unveiling unique facets of local culture and history. One of his favourite travel experiences was in Guangxi, particularly in Yangshuo and Guilin. The stunning karst mountains and serene riverscapes were visually captivating, and he was deeply impressed by the rich culture of the local ethnic minorities, which added an extra layer of depth to the experience. Another memorable destination was Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, known for its awe-inspiring sandstone pillars, which inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. The park’s dramatic landscape and breathtaking views made it one of the most picturesque locations he visited in China.
In addition to these natural wonders, he also travelled extensively across China, including cities like Xiamen, Shanghai, and Beijing, each offering its own distinct blend of modernity and tradition. A particularly enriching experience was his visit to the Shandong, where he explored the town of Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius. Visiting the Confucius Temple and his tomb gave him a deeper understanding of Chinese philosophy and the cultural importance of Confucianism, offering a unique perspective on Chinese history and thought.

Regarding daily life in China, Giancarlo expresses admiration for the country’s affordability and infrastructure. Many goods and services are more accessible compared to Europe. China’s modern transportation networks, efficient logistics, and smart city management systems have left a deep impression on him.
Learning Chinese remains a priority for Giancarlo, serving as a key to integrating into society and understanding the culture. Through relentless effort, his proficiency, particularly in listening, has improved significantly. Though experiencing some initial struggles, he now comfortably follows daily conversations and lectures. However, cultural differences might still pose challenges. Despite actively socializing with Chinese friends, occasional misunderstandings arise in deeper cultural exchanges. Yet, he views these challenges as opportunities for growth, continually striving to enhance his cross-cultural communication skills.
Looking Ahead: Deepening International Exchange, Building China-Europe Collaboration
Looking forward, Giancarlo aims to further root himself in China and improve his Chinese proficiency. “China, a nation brimming with vitality and opportunities, offers vast potential for growth,” he states. Rapid economic development, technological innovation, and cultural exchanges here constantly inspire his learning and creativity. He aspires to absorb knowledge and experience like a sponge, evolving in this challenging environment.
He hopes to leverage his cross-cultural background and expertise to contribute to international trade. As China’s global economic influence grows, he believes China-Europe trade and cooperation will flourish. He aspires to act as a bridge between the two regions, fostering mutual economic prosperity.
Moreover, he wishes his story to inspire more foreigners to understand China comprehensively. In his view, many still hold fragmented perceptions of China’s history, society, and culture. Through sharing his experiences, he aims to showcase China’s diversity and allure, attracting international talent to study, work, and live in China, thereby promoting cultural exchange and global progress.
From the academic halls of HSBC Business School to the practical frontiers of the European Chamber of Commerce in China, Giancarlo’s journey exemplifies how to bridge campus and career, excelling on the global stage. As 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, Giancarlo is poised to contribute further to international cooperation, writing new chapters in China-Europe collaboration!
