Speed Tutoring Event Brings Internationals and Local Students Together

Date:

On the night of March 21, 2015, this semester’s Speed Tutoring event took place on the PKU campus, as this initiative has been organized by the International Association and English Association. The speed tutoring program is one of the bigger activities on our campus that promotes integration between the international student population and the Chinese students. Rather than have students randomly matched with language partners as was done in the past, Speed Tutoring provides a platform for students to find suitable, likeminded language partners. Just as previous events of this nature, the event welcomed a large number of students eager to meet new people and potential language partners. This semester, many of the new exchange students, first year full-time students, and even international students from Harbin Institute of Technology attended this special event.

As PKU’s international community continues to expand, we’ve seen a great amount of support for events that brings students together. More than 30 international students were present, and they were encouraged to find common ground with local ones. Before sitting down, everyone was warmly welcomed and asked to put a nametag on. Throughout the evening, Speed Tutoring’s host, Australian exchange student Adrienne Fritchley, guided everyone through the motions of switching tables, swapping contact information, and keeping things in order. Students excitedly conversed with one another while enjoying drinks and snacks provided by EA, IA, and the HIT Café.

At the end of the tutoring session, all students present gathered to take a group picture to commemorate the event. It was a happy night for many students because they made new friends and acquired more knowledge about new cultures. International and local students showed a lot of passion about future meet ups. They both realize the importance the school gives to these events and thanked the International Association and English Association for their efforts. We are looking forward to covering more events that bring the world together at PKU Shenzhen.
