Speed Tutoring Night

Date:

On the night of September 7th, Speed Tutoring Night, co-organized by the English Association and the International Student Association, was held for the first time at the University Café.

The tutoring program is one of the activities organized by the English Association, aimed at building language learning and social platforms for both Chinese and international students. This year, the English Association urged students to use their own initiative to find language partners themselves rather than randomly match the students together as in the past.

From the beginning of the night the event had an overwhelming amount of support from both international and Chinese students. A long queue quickly formed in front of the University Café to register. More than a hundred people registered online or at the event including 30 international students and more than 100 Chinese students. President of the International Student Association, Tiago Loureiro, and President of the English Association, Lu Yuan, began the event with a warm welcome. The first activity was open group discussion between tables of Chinese and International Students. Students were encouraged to find common topics according to their common interests. This was followed by three rounds of “one on one” conversations. International students remained seated while Chinese students took turns talking with International students. They exchanged their contact information and wrote down the names of their favorite language partners. Volunteers then selected the language pairs based on the students’ two-way choices.

After the event, the organizers talked with some participants and received excellent feedback. Some international students were surprised with their Chinese classmates’ enthusiasm and said this eliminated their previous impressions of their shy and introverted classmates. Chinese students said this gave them a unique opportunity to meet many international students. They believed this was a start to many close friendships.
