Shenzhen – Graduation, just like prom is the signal of a major change in a student’s academic life. The excitement that you feel in your hearts after spending two years- 3 years for some of us- of hard work, tears, sweat and frustration finally ends with a big bang where success is lauded and achievements are praised. Tom Brokaw, a personal idol of mine, once said, “You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.” For many, graduating will be the start of their journey in the real world while for others it will be a chance to continue their delayed successes. Be it in China or in their home countries, the University had given them the ammunition to be the world movers and shakers.
As the University continues to welcome diversity to its student body, the upcoming graduation will go down in history as the largest international graduates the Shenzhen campus has witnessed yet. This year’s convocation ceremony will congratulate graduates from Thailand, United States, Uganda, Nigeria, Namibia, Pakistan, Iran, Italy, Columbia and England receiving their degrees. Peking University Graduate School Shenzhen has already taken the lead in cultivating the next generation of China and the world, which has been a constant theme for this campus in 2012.
Graduating from the “Harvard of Asia”, the memories of studying in Peking University will surely be a stand out experience in students’ lives. Chalida Suksabjarern , a second year Management graduate talked about her memory of studying in the university and she says; “Studying in Peking University, the best University in China, means a lot to me. I have absorbed valuable knowledge and spirit, and at the same time, I am building a global professional network. I believe that all of this would help me to be successful in my future career”. Studying in Peking University is definitely one of the toughest challenges that most international students had to endure. From adapting to the style of learning that the local students are accustomed with, studying the unique language that has slowly becoming a staple in the world, and to the different cultures that the students are exposed to, studying in the University is definitely a rewarding challenge.
The largest batch of international graduates to date has enabled the University to take a step forward in its mission of internationalization. Founded in 2000, the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School was built as an extension off the main campus in Beijing and hoping to introduce the world to China academic world. Using the principle of “New frontiers, interdisciplinary studies, applied research, and international standards”, the establishment of the Shenzhen campus will hopefully bring more international academics and research to China. To help achieve their goals, the University had acquired faculty members from the world’s leading Universities to be a part of their academic team. The process of going global had started 5 years ago in 2008 when the university began to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In 2009, the University opened its doors to the first batch of international students and by the end of 2011; around 43 international students from 20 different countries came to Shenzhen to be a part of this prestigious institution.
There are many perks that one can receive from studying in a business school; one of them is the entrepreneurial spirit. One of the international graduates has opened his own business in China that hopefully will create a bridge between China and his country. The same sentiment was expressed by Chalida who said that she is hoping to use the knowledge that she had gained from the University to help her when she is starting her own business.
Looking back to their times in China, these eclectic batch of international students has fond memories of their times spent together. Last year, some of them had the opportunity to join the track & field teams that competed in the main campus and ended in glories for the Shenzhen campus. This also provided them the opportunity to explore everything that Beijing had to offer. In addition to this, they also celebrated the culture diversities in the campus by hosting various events such as the Thai New Year, the Persian New Year, and Thanksgiving. Furthermore, they also created the International Student Association that serves as a melting pot for various cultures in the campus.
Out of all the experiences that they had in the campus, defending their thesis stood as one of the most memorable for most of them. Unlike other students, the international students had a year to prepare for their thesis writing and defense. Audrey Hepburn once said that “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” and it surely is for them. What initially was a nightmare for them had become a triumph on their lives when they passed their defenses. A second year economic student from the United States said that the defense was a way for them to prove themselves that they are capable of performing in a high level and fully utilized the knowledge they had gained from the University for their advantages. However, some of the students thought that the thesis defense process was a peculiar one as some good theses could fail without considerable reasons. Furthermore, they agreed that the school should set a more standardized criteria to help judging the theses as it might help the growth of the University. Hileni Kalimbo from Namibia said that she is hoping that the University can be a top international business school, not just in China. On that note, regarding the future growth of the school, the graduating students are hoping that the school will make improvements in their systems and facilities to meet international standards. However, exciting things are in store for the upcoming batch of students, one of them being the new building of PHBS that will hopefully be ready for the next academic year.
Graduation, a major event in one’s life, signifies the end of a chapter in someone’s book and the beginning of something excited. Most of the students will reckon this event as a bittersweet ending. On one hand, it signifies their latest triumphs in the academic world. While on the other end of the spectrum, they will say ‘Zaijian’ to the family that they have built while they are in China. Most of them will spread their wings and pursue their dreams in other parts of the world, while some might stay in China to follow their aspirations. No matter what happens next, this bunch will always have memories and knowledge that they had acquired in PHBS to help them be the next world leaders. Congratulations students on your graduation and we cannot wait to witness your victories in your chosen fields. Thank you for the memories and we wish you all the best!
