2014 PKU Shenzhen Commencement

On June 28th, 2014, the graduation ceremony of Peking University Shenzhen to honor the outgoing and meritorious students was held in the International Conference Center. The venue was brimming with jubilant graduating students clicking pictures in their graduation robes and their ecstatic and proud parents who came from far off places to see their sons and daughters graduate.



Party Secretary Bai Zhiqiang served as the Master of Ceremonies. The ceremony officially began with the screening of a graduation video created by the present class of students to honor their seniors. The video was filled with snippets and memories of the past three years. This was followed by a procession of leaders and distinguished guests to the stage. All the leaders as well faculty members were dressed in their graduation robes, reminiscent of their days as a student.This was followed by the Chinese National Anthem and the introduction of leaders and guests and key speeches from students and dignitaries.






Kristaps Ronis, an international graduating student from Latvia spoke on behalf of all graduating students. He began by thanking all the graduating students for selecting him as the first international student to speak on their behalf. He then recounted his days at PKU Shenzhen and PHBS and lauded the university’s present progress and the university itself as a ‘truly international university’. This was followed by a speech on behalf of all the faculty representatives delivered by Qin Hua Peng, Professor at the School of Environment and Energy.



He delivered an emotional and nostalgic address chronicling the growth of his students, the nights they spent at the lab in tireless research and how he will always cherish student mentor relationship he developed with his students.



Yu Liang, the alumni representative and the CEO of China Vanke. Co. Ltd, spoke next on similar tunes recounting how his Peking University education paved the way for his career and life in general. He advised the graduating students not ignore the small things in life by indulging tirelessly in work.



The Chancellor of PKU Shenzhen, Dr. Chen Shiyi spoke next. In his first address to the PKU Shenzhen community at large, he spoke about the path PKU Shenzhen has traversed slowly over the years and how it is scripting history time and again. He quoted Einstein and said what remains now with him after graduating from PKU Shenzhen is not the experiments he learned or lectures he attended but independent spirit and free thinking. He asked the students to be persistent in their careers, focus on living a spiritual life and be brave enough to shoulder responsibilities. The school then honored ‘Outstanding Graduates of 2014’, students who had distinguished themselves by their sheer hard work. Graduate diplomas were then issued to all the Master’s degree candidates followed by distribution of graduate diplomas to the graduating students. Luan Shenji, EGC Director, PKU Shenzhen first announced the name of doctoral degree candidates. Chancellor Chen Shiyi and Prof. Hai Wen handed the diplomas to the students.





The ceremony ended with a chorus ‘Ode to the motherland’ sung by all and a group photo session outside Moot Court.
