On the night of December 20, 2014, PKU Shenzhen held the 2015 New Year Carnival and Mirror Lake Evening Party by Mirror Lake, the theme of which was “Reflecting Childhood & Enjoying Youth.” Leaders, alumni, students and professors of PKU Shenzhen watched and enjoyed the show.
This year’s stage was designed as a castle shrouded in mist, like that of fairy tales, and the hosts were dressed as princes and princesses. The inspiration of the stage set was born of the childhood dreams shared by many students who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s-- to be a prince or princess, living happily in a castle.
Though the winter night in Southern China was cold and windy, the opening show with all kinds of cartoon characters, including Mickey Mouse, Panda, the Lion King, brought back a lot of childhood memories for the audience members.
Girls of Xili Primary School brought their dance performance of ‘We are in Grade One’, showing naughty and amusing children’s life fragments at school, bringing all spectators to their own childhood memory.
Afterwards, Tan Wenchang, Secretary of the Communist Party Committee and Vice President of PKU Shenzhen gave the opening speech for the Evening Party. Mr. Tan mentioned that though PKU Shenzhen was thirteen years old, just as a little child, the students here have shown impressive creativity and dynamics. He noted all the achievements that PKU Shenzhen made in the past year and thanked all leaders, students, professors, alumni and other people who contributed to the development of PKU Shenzhen.

“Water of the Weiming Lake, Moon in the Mirror Lake” was the dance performed by Nanyan Dance Society. Weiming Lake was located in PKU Beijing, and Mirror Lake was in PKU Shenzhen. The name of the dance showed that PKU Shenzhen and PKU Beijing was following one tradition and of one origin. The Weiming Lake was a symbol of the emotional attachment and ambitious dreams of PKU students and professors, while Mirror Lake, was also the spiritual attachment and cultural logo of PKU people in the Southern China. The dancers’ movement and postures brought the spectators from the moon of the Mirror Lake to Yanyuan in the north.
Feng Xuehan and Li Zijin, two administrative teachers showed a couple’s cha-cha routine named Mengmengda, the passionate dance was accompanied with a couple of adorable Minions.
Nanyan Dance Society and Nanyan Street Dancing Society gave an energetic performance to the song Mamma Mia. Hu Yue of the School of Transnational Law performed a solo dance named Spirit of the Peacock, her graceful postures and shadows in the stage lighting was like a proud peacock spreading its tail.
Nanyan Chorus brought their song As Long As I Have Music.
The next show was by Korean professors and students. They sang songs and performed the dances of many popular TV series, including Dae Jang Geum. Young Joon Park, an international faculty member at PHBS, and his young daughter sang a Korean nursery rhyme alongside the animation of The Three Bears. The show ended with Gangnam Style and won the applause of the spectators.
Ma Jun and Wang Guanling sang the song “Girl’s Love”, which was an interlude song in the famous TV series of A Journey to the West, talking about the love of the queen of the women’s kingdom for Monk Tang. During their singing, a short video of the famous actress of the queen, Zhu Ling, was played; she sent her greetings to PKU students and wished everyone happy new year. Many students were thrilled to see her on the screen.
Students of the School of Transnational Law brought a stage plan of Recollection of Our Childhood, which showed the childhood memory of different generations born in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Their creative performance with humorous lines, singing, and dancing caused bursts of laughter among the audience.
The lucky draw was another exciting part the carnival. Every participant sent a photo of their childhood selves juxtaposed with a current photo to join the drawing. The hosts drew the winner by choosing the photos as they rolled across the big screen. Night on Mirror Lake's final prize went home with a lucky couple: a Canon EOS 700D DSLR camera.
Finally, the evening party ended with a chorus of the song “Let Us Sway Twin Oars”. This is one of the most popular songs in China, about the spring outing in the Summer Palace and every one could sing it by heart. We wish that in the New Year, we will sway our oars of dreams and make another fruitful year.
