Detao Talks Series Presents AWN Co-Founder Dan Sarto

Date:

On the afternoon of April 4, 2015, the Detao Talks Series brought Dan Sarto to Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. Dan Sarto founded Animation World Network (AWN.com) with his business partner, Ron Diamond, in 1995. Since its founding, AWN has become the largest and most comprehensive source for animation news and information resources on the Internet.

In his talk, entitled “How to Plan and Develop a Fun, Fulfilling and Sucessful Career in Animation and Related Fields” he covered lessons and tips from his experience in the animation industry that are applicable to business students and general career building.

Sarto demonstrated his in-depth knowledge of the animation and entertainment industries, discussing everything from Pixar’s revival of Disney animated films to the particulars of the Chinese animation industry. Afterward, he delved into the tips for getting a leg up in your career. He began by focusing on marketing yourself well; have a well-designed business card and do not attend networking events with colleagues or friends. The point of these events is to make new connections, which is a bit harder to do if you don’t branch out of your social circle. He also warned everyone to be cautious with social media because your reputation is always at stake. However, with these tips one must also be careful to never focus so much on self-promotion that the quality and progress of your craft suffers for it.

The audience watched two different clips “Mr. Hublot” and “Box” that depicted the great diversity of the animation industry. Sarto went on to explain that animation is truly everywhere, with the fields of pre-, pitch-, and post-visualization becoming increasingly important in the industry. After a question and answer session, all audience members left with more insight on the animation industry and practical lessons to  be learned from it.
