Sawadee Songkran! On April 18
th
, the International Association together with the PKU Student Union held the Songkran Water Festival Event, Thai New Year. Since it is the most important festival for Thai sisters and HSBC students, Chalida and Tayatha Suksabjarern, they wanted to share this festival and Thai culture with friends at PKU Shenzhen.
“Songkran Day,” an important event on the Buddhist calendar, is a water festival that marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. During Songkran day, Thai people celebrate with water; the throwing of water has become a huge part of the celebrations. If you're visiting Thailand during this period, don't be surprised if you get splashed! Appreciation of family is another important aspect of the festival, with many Thai people making their way to their hometowns to spend time with older relatives. Buddhists also visit temples throughout Songkran where water is poured on images of Buddha and on the hands of Buddhist monks as a sign of respect.
International and Chinese students and faculty gathered in the Moot Court to celebrate Thai New Year. The event opened with a short documentary introducing the Thai culture and the history of Songkran.
After that, Chalida and Tayatha showed everyone how to make a delicious Thai dessert, called “Lookchup.”
Everyone enjoyed making their own Lookchup (putting mix ingredient in shape, painting them, and lastly dipping them in gelatin).
Then, Pakistani HSBC student, Anas Ali Rao, held everyone in Thai traditional activity, Coconut Shell Sandals Racing, “Den Kala.” Students and Faculty participated in Walking Coconut shell competition, it was so much fun!
Lastly, the most important part for Thai New Year, everyone moved to garden to enjoy water fight. We splashed water, threw water balloons, and applied powder on each other’s faces.
