PHBS Students Take Part in the Asia Global Dialogue 2013 in Hong Kong

Date:

HONG KONG - Last week, a multinational group of Peking University HSBC Business School students, originating from China, Thailand, Singapore, Canada, Germany and the United States, participated in the Fung Global Institute’s 2013 Asia Global Dialogue Conference. The conference took place during December 5th and 6th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong.

During two exciting days, students were exposed to thought leaders in all areas of expertise related to the Asian and global economy. Dignitaries, among others, included Victor Fung, founder of the Fung Global Institute, Andrew Sheng, President of the Fung Global Institute, Michael Spence, Academic Councils Chairman of the Fung Global Institute and Nobel laureate in economics, Stuart Gulliver, Group Chief Executive of HSBC Holdings and Chairman of the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation, Sam Palmisano, former chief executive officer of IBM Corporation and Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

Students were not only fortunate enough to here from such experts on a variety of subjects through panels and breakout sessions, but had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of experts and leaders during the conference’s networking sessions. These three aspects - panels, breakout sessions and networking sessions- were critical for the students’ development outside of the classroom.

Having participated in a conference of such intellectual quality will certainly prove extremely valuable in the students’ future development.  The conference’s main focus was titled: “Towards a New Global Economy - What Next for Jobs, Opportunity and Growth?” Key issues the conference covered were Asian finance 2020, global value chains, evolving growth models and Asia’s sustainable development.

Students heard from business leaders on the commercial opportunities that will present themselves in Asia in coming decades and how to realize such opportunities in the future as business leaders. Particularly vital for the students was the focus on sustainability, which will certainly be the greatest challenge of all for the next generation of global and Asian leaders. Students heard from leading policy makers as well as business leaders on the issue in intensive, specific, sustainability related sessions.

The focus on sustainability was taken full-circle, however, as the conference also incorporated
sustainability in every applicable session, which provided the students with an excellent understanding of the importance of sustainability and the all encompassing mindset business and thought leaders take when considering sustainability.

At 8 p.m. on Friday, students returned to the Shenzhen campus of Peking University. They brought with them not only valuable new experiences and prominent contacts, but a renewed sense of motivation to meet the challenges of Asia's future head on. This kind of event has a profound impact on students' understanding of the complexities of today's global economy and drives home the importance of soft skills such as professional interaction and networking. In more ways than one, attending the conference allows students to take in lessons far exceeding what can be learned in the classroom.

The students would like to extend their gratitude to Hai Wen, Dean of PHBS, Vincent Chang, Executive Dean of PHBS, Huang Haifeng, Assistant Dean of PHBS, and look forward to similar opportunities in the future.
