Academic Forum of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

On March 24
th
, the forum of “Analyzing and Evaluating the Videos of the City of Wisdom” was held in the International Meeting Center, jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), PKU Shenzhen Graduate School and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Bringing together well-known scientists and high level industry authorities in China and abroad, this academic forum discussed major scientific problems in the process of analyzing and evaluating modern cities. It aimed at discussing China’s major needs and great industrial prosperity. Most importantly, it put forward advice from different perspectives for China’s overall arrangement of scientific research as well as technological and industrial development.
Scholars from the Chinese Academy of Engineering attended this forum, including Pan Yunhe, Executive Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Xu Yangsheng, Vice President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Zhong Shan from the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation; Scholars Li Deren, Li Deyi, Fen Xisheng, Cai Hegao, and Gao Wen, Associate Supervisor of the National Natural Science Foundation. Other leaders and scholars joined this forum, including Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen Chen Biao, Vice Inspector Xu Jin from the Bureau of International Cooperation of CAE, Vice Inspector Gao Zhanjun from the Third Bureau of CAE, and Associate Director Qiu Xuan from the Innovation of Science and Technology Commission of Shenzhen. Hai Wen, the Vice President of PKU and Chancellor of PKU Shenzhen, and Shi Shouxu, the Executive Vice President of PKU Shenzhen hosted the forum. Professor Wang Wenming, the Executive Vice President from SECE acted as the Master of Ceremonies.
“City of Wisdom” was a concept based on networking and large data cloud computing technology, which will be major part of direction of development of future cities. This forum emphasized its focus on these two facets: efficient coding and transmission of high-definition video; effective analysis and study from large data of videos.
Gao Wen, academician from CAE and Associate Aupervisor of National Natural Science Foundation began the forum with a speech. He pointed out that video analysis and monitoring had become indispensible with the global development of information technology. From then, there were still problems concerning development of the “city of wisdom” and monitoring system. Thus, it was the duty of this forum to gather scholars and authorities in related fields offer their expert advice.
Hai Wen, Vice president of PKU Shenzhen and Chancellor of PKU Shenzhen, welcomed all participates on behalf of all faculty members at PKU Shenzhen. He gave an overview of the development progress and future plans for in PKU Shenzhen. At the same time, he pointed out that holding this forum was in line with PKU Shenzhen’s academic principles of “New Frontiers, Interdisciplinary Studies, Applied Research and International Standards.” He also indicated that discussing critical technology in the development of China’s “City of Wisdom” had great significance in promoting this process as well as the PKU Shenzhen’s own research process. Chen Biao, Vice President of Shenzhen, addressed on the opening ceremony. He also pointed out that this vital city needed more advice for the development and globalization of the China’s IT systems from scholars and researchers.
Fang Li, the representative of entrepreneurs, Chief Operating Officer from China Security & Surveillance Technology interpreted the characteristics and significance of this forum and also extended his wish to further cooperate with colleges to promote the development of related industries.
The forum included three parts. In the morning session, Li Deren, Scholar from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering; Li Deyi, Dean of the Computer College from Zhejiang University, Scholar from the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Hu Shiming, Associate Director of the Department of Computer from Tsinghua University reported on visual detection, video monitoring, intelligent driving and image processing. In the afternoon session, specialized discussions were held about new generation video coding techniques. In the last session, scholars from different universities and institutions explained their research areas specifically and made answered questions from students.
