CA Program Holds Calligraphy Charm Event for Internationals

     Last Thursday, the event “Creating a Calligraphy Charm”, which aimed at bringing the international students to have a brief appreciation of the beauty of Chinese culture, was held in C102 with the sponsor being the International Affairs Office. This semester’s event takes pride in the thirty or so international students that joined this year.
 


     This time, the event started with an introduction of the evolution of Chinese characters, after which the international students were taught to learn the five basic strokes that constructed Chinese characters: horizontal stroke, vertical stroke, left-falling stroke, right-falling stoke and dot. With snacks and drinks served, students had a good time experiencing the charm of calligraphy.



     In the second half of the event, Beida student, Zhang Xingxing, taught some Chinese characters that are of common use, e.g., city name like Shanghai and Shenzhen, father and son. The event ended up with the teaching of the Chinese character “Fu”, which means luck and good fortune in English. In Chinese, it is common to see people to stick the character “Fu” upside down on the door to pray for good luck.

 
     “Creating a Calligraphy Charm”, held in 2014 for the first time, is now held twice annually and has become a traditional event targeted at involving the international students with Chinese culture. Each time the campus advisors try their best to present the most interesting part of calligraphy to the international students.
