Friday, November 28th, PHBS had the honor of receiving Dr. Guoli Chen, an Assistant Professor of Strategy at INSEAD, one of the world’s top-ranking international business schools with the most diverse student profile and the largest executive education training programs.
Dr. Chen’s work has been published in top academic journals including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Business Venturing, and Leadership Quarterly, among others. His papers have received many awards at the Academy of Management Conference and Strategic Management Society Conference. His research focuses on the influence of CEOs, top executives, and boards of directors on strategic choices and organizational outcomes, as well as the dynamics in CEO-board relationships and corporate governance.
Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Pennsylvania State University. Today, he teaches Strategy, Value Innovation, Incentives Design and Corporate Governance to various programs, including full time MBAs, Master of Finance, Executives and PhDs.
Before academia, Dr. Chen worked as an investment banker at Daiwa Securities before. He has a rich experience in raising fund from equity markets, including helping Chinese firms going on their Initial Public Offering (IPO) in overseas markets.
In his presentation at PHBS, Dr. Chen spoke about how individuals respond to the death of a peer by re-evaluating their approach to, and priorities in, their life and their career. In his study, which is still ongoing, he argues that CEOs who experience the passing of a director at the same firm will subsequently be more likely to seek a different lifestyle, which will have significant organizational outcomes. In this case named “The Quiet Life”, CEOs will consider their legacy and will think more about the impact they have on others.
We are looking forward to Dr. Chen’s future visits and wish him all the best with his research.
