Student-hosted Booths at New Year Carnival

Date:

On December 19, 2014, sixteen white tents stood in front of apartment buildings, each hosted by students from each school, five associations, and one by PKUSZ’s international students. Dozens of people including students and teachers are queuing up before every tent to play the games and taste the snacks. The theme of the annual Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School Night on Mirror Lake Carnival was “The Memory of the Childhood”. Although the drizzle turned to rain, students’ enthusiasm was not doused.

The carnival consisted of two activities, the booths and the parade. The four main elements for the exhibition booths are games, food, TV and fairy tales which are the most unforgettable memory from the 80’s and 90’s. Two booths organized the game of “Ring Toss”. The booth hosted by international students had a “Wheel of Fortune” and “Find the Ball”.

Another two schools are hosted a simple lottery. Students spared no effort to compete in the games to win the prizes-- snacks and toys. Marshmallow, sugar-coated haw, bubble chewing gum, latiao, jumping frog, Rubik’s Cube and plastic dragonflies brought all the students back to their childhoods. Meanwhile, all of the tents also had another battle: who would be the one that attracted the most participants? Therefore, several tents had mascots play the cartoon characters with whom students could take photos. One tent hosted karaoke with songs from the 1980s and 1990s, with volunteers in fairy tale clothes to help with the game. Students held a ticket to play the games and received stamps to participate in the final lottery.

The parade started at 7:00 pm. Students and teachers from every school dressed up in the theme, walked around half the lake and had a small performance on the second stage. The School of Electronic and Computer Engineering was the first to put on the show. The Avengers including Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor weaved in and out of the crowd to give good luck to those taking final exams. Then lines of fresh color came into sight. The students from School of Chemical Biology and Biotechnology were representing the youth, enthusiastic and optimistic. Then the music turned to nursery rhyme, and lines of familiar cartoon characters from when we were young waving their hands as they passed. The School of Urban Planning and Design came next. Three leading characters rode bicycles in the front, followed by a group of young faces in clothes of 1980s. Then they sang and danced a popular song of our time winning a lot of applause from the audience. The students from the School of Advanced Materials let their imagination spread based on their major. They dressed up as lithium batteries to reflect the significance of new technology and advanced materials. The Business school was the third to step up the stage. They wore the wizard clothes of Hogwarts and danced. They held a poster that read "Have dreams and take actions" to celebrate the school's tenth anniversary. The dean from the School of Transnational Law was invited to lead the group. He dressed up as Bao Zheng, one of the most excellent detectives and officials in ancient China. The students accordingly played the part of the staff in court. The wise judge guiding the students toward  justice. Finally, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences reached the floor. They reproduced the Long March, in Red Army clothes and bearing the red flags, unveiling a wonderful world of communism.

After half an hour, the carnival ended with echoing sounds of laughter and excitement and the fragrance of memories and hope.
