The Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Competition (commonly known as Price Moot), was established by the University of Oxford in honour of Professor Monroe E. Price, the founder of its Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy. Since its establishment in 2008, the competition has provided a platform for law students worldwide to explore and debate pressing human rights issues in the digital age, particularly concerning freedom of speech, privacy rights, data protection, and international human rights law.

The STL moot court team was formed in July 2024 under the guidance of Moot Court Program Director, Professor Qiu Xiaoya, and C.V. Starr Senior Lecturer, Professor Pu Jinke. The team was coached by student coach Li Yaxin (Class of 2022), with team members including Guo Xiaoqi(Class of 2023), Shao Yingqi(Class of 2023), He Xun(Class of 2023), and Liu Yuan (Class of 2023).

During the preparation phase, the team faced intense time constraints and a heavy research workload. Despite these challenges, they worked together diligently to craft their written submissions. As the competition moved into the oral rounds, the team maintained a rigorous training schedule even amid the pressures of final exams. They focused on refining their responses to judicial questioning, mastering time management, and upholding courtroom decorum.

The competition officially commenced on January 22, with the STL team facing off against strong opponents, including Shandong University, the University of the Philippines (2024 world champions in the Jessup International Law Moot and Stetson International Environmental Moot), and Ateneo de Zamboanga University. With their strong legal expertise and well-structured arguments, STL’s representatives impressed the judges and advanced to the semifinals. There, they competed against Singapore Management University (SMU), a multiple-time global champion. Despite an intense and highly competitive match, STL narrowly missed the final round, concluding their journey in the Top Four.

They are determined to build on their achievements and strive for excellence on the global stage.

Congratulations once again to the STL team on their remarkable performance, and best wishes for continued success in the international rounds!
